Located in the Andes mountains of Peru, this magnificent citadel was constructed by the Inca in the 15th century.  It was occupied for a period of 80-years by rulers Pachacutec and T˙pac until the time of the Spanish conquest.  It was not discovered by the conquistadors.  Machu Picchu lay abandoned until its rediscovery by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.  It is now open for visitors to marvel at.
