Day-1 - Santa Elena,
Petén (Flores) / Carmelita / Trail
Transfer overland from Mundo Maya airport in Santa Elena, Petén to the sleepy jungle outpost of Carmelita.
Load pack mules. We begin in earnest our jungle trek.
Hiking is alternated with riding on mules or horses. The pace is leisurely to ensure a full appreciation of the surroundings.
All meals on trail and dinner in camp. All meals on trail and dinner in camp.
Day-2 - Trail
Breakfast. Continue on trail. Since the trail passes through low-land rain forest, there is ample opportunity to spot numerous varieties of bromeliads and orchids along the way.
Arrive at El Mirador site by evening. All meals on trail and dinner in camp.
Day-3 - El Mirador
Breakfast. All day to explore this monumental site (El Mirador) that encompassed the largest area in square miles than any other known Maya site, and what is considered the ultimate Mayan archaeological destination.
Explore fortification walls, causeways, temple of El Dante, El Tigre, Mono, and all other sections discussed in the September 1987 , issue of "National Geographic".
All meals and overnight at campsite within the ruins.
Day-4 - El Mirador / Trail
Breakfast. Load pack mules and begin return trek towards Carmelita. Because of its remoteness, difficult access, and slight disturbance by humans, the bird life is astonishing.
All meals and camp on trail.
Day-5 - Trail / Carmelita / Santa Elena,
Petén (Flores)
Breakfast. Second day on trail. Lunch on trail. Arrive in Carmelita by evening.
Overland to Santa Elena, Petén (Flores).
