Expedition #4 - Trekking El Mirador - Itinerary - Updated for 2007
(9-Days / 8-Nights)  -  (Minimum of 4-Persons)

Departs from: Guatemala City  

 
Day-1 - Guatemala City
Arrival in Guatemala City. Pick up and transfer from airport to hotel. Overnight accommodations at Grand Tikal Futura Hotel**** or similar  

Day-2 - Guatemala City / Santa Elena, Petén (Flores) / Carmelita
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport for flight departure to Santa Elena, Petén. Meet expedition leader at the airport in Santa Elena. Transfer overland to the sleepy jungle outpost of Carmelita. Box lunch, dinner and camp.  

Day-3 - Trail 
Breakfast. Load pack mules. We begin in earnest our jungle trek. Hiking is alternated with riding on mules or horses. The pace is leisurely to ensure a full appreciation of the surroundings. All meals on trail and dinner in camp.  

Day-4 - Trail 
Breakfast. Continue on trail. Since the trail passes through low-land rain forest, there is ample opportunity to spot numerous varieties of bromeliads and orchids along the way. Arrive at El Mirador site by evening. All meals on trail and dinner in camp.   

Day-5 - El Mirador
All day to explore this monumental site that encompassed the largest area in square miles than any other known Maya site, and what is considered the ultimate Mayan archaeological destination. Explore fortification walls, causeways, temples of El Dante, El Tigre, Mono, and all other sections discussed in the September 1987, issue of "National Geographic". All meals and overnight at campsite within the ruins.  

Day-6 - El Mirador / Trail
Breakfast. Load pack mules and begin return trek towards Carmelita. Because of its remoteness, difficult access, and slight disturbance by humans, the bird life is astonishing. Meals and camp on trail.   

Day-7 - Trail / Carmelita / El Remate
Breakfast. Second day on trail. Lunch on trail. Arrive in Carmelita by evening. Overland to El Remate. Overnight accommodations in Hotel La Casa de Don David*** or similar.   

Day-8 - El Remate / Tikal / Santa Elena, Petén / Guatemala City
Breakfast.  Transfer to the archaeological site of Tikal, the most powerful city of the Classic period.  Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.  Visit the Plaza of the Great Pyramid or the Lost World, the Plaza of the Seven Temples, Temples I, II, the Twin Pyramid Complex and the Acropolis among others. Lunch within the park. Transfer to the airport in Santa Elena, Petén for the return flight to Guatemala City.  Pick up and transfer from airport to hotel.   Overnight accommodations at Grand Tikal Futura Hotel**** or similar.   

Day-9 - Guatemala City / La Aurora International Airport
Breakfast. Transfer to La Aurora International airport for flight departure.
