Your journey into the Amazon Jungle begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. During the 30-minute flight over the Andes from Quito to the jungle town of Coca, on a clear day you'll enjoy amazing views of snow covered mountains and the endless green expanse of the rainforest as you begin your descent into the Amazon.
At the Coca airport you’ll be greeted by your Yachana guide, and then transported to the river port where you’ll board our 57-ft (18-m).
motorized canoe for the 2-1/2 hour trip upriver.
A box lunch will be served as we navigate the Napo River. Life vests are provided so you can fully relax and enjoy your ride along one of the largest tributaries to the legendary Amazon River.
At Yachana Lodge, you’ll receive a warm welcome from our native staff that will serve you a refreshing beverage and snack as you are introduced to the Lodge facilities and issued rubber boots to use during your stay with us.
After you’ve had a chance to rest in your room, your guide will take you on a short hike to an overlook where you can see the splendor of the rainforest reach out as far as the eye can see in every direction.
On clear days you can even see the impressive Sumaco Volcano in the distance.
If you don’t want to take the hike up the hill to the overlook, you can also choose to visit our beautiful butterfly house.
Enjoy a cocktail or other refreshing beverage while witnessing a spectacular sunset from the bar or observation deck.
Dinner is served between 7:00 - 7:30 PM.
After breakfast, travel by canoe downriver five minutes to the community of Agua Santa where you will board Yachana’s double-decker ranchera (typical local bus) and accompany your guide as he leads you on a journey into the rainforest stopping to observe birds, and possibly monkeys, along the way.
During your rainforest trek your guide will explain the uses of various medicinal plants and amaze you with his knowledge about the diverse birds and animals that inhabit the rainforest he calls home. Return to the lodge for lunch and an opportunity to rest or explore the lodge’s beautiful botanical gardens on your own.
Later in the afternoon you will again travel by canoe to the home of shaman to learn about local Kichwa culture and traditions and to participate in a cleansing ceremony.
Afterwards, try your skills at using a typical blowgun and spear.
Your guide will then offer you the option of returning to the lodge floating down the Napo River on inner tubes or you may simply use your life jacket - a relaxing way to enjoy the spectacular scenery that surrounds you. Back at the lodge you have a chance to rest before dinner.
After dinner on one of your evenings at the lodge your guide will offer to take you on a night walk to discover a totally different side of the forest that only comes alive after dark.
On this walk, you have the change to see many small insects, amphibians, reptiles and other animals.
You have the option to start your day early by participating in a bird watching excursion or sleep a little longer before enjoying another splendid breakfast, the first of the day’s Amazon culinary delights.
After breakfast, your guide will take you in the canoe downriver to a place where he will lead you on a hike in search of the endemic
hoatzín, a prehistoric-looking bird found only in select areas of the Amazon Rainforest.
Afterwards, travel on to the Yachana Technical High School to visit Yachana’s organic farms and have a chance to interact with the region’s next generation of leaders.
This will take most of the morning and will give you an opportunity to see how a meaningful education and the Yachana Foundation is making a difference in the lives of many young people from the Amazon region.
We then return to the lodge and before lunch participate in an Amazon cooking class led by our indigenous chefs.
After lunch, time for a siesta before another excursion with your guide (tubing on the river, for example) or you can try your hand at making a natural fiber basket like the ones used by the indigenous people of the region.
Time to relax and sample an exotic cocktail before dinner.
After dinner there’s free time for your own leisure activities or optional activities scheduled by the lodge that could include a dance presentation by the students of the high school or bonfire on the beach, all depending on availability and weather conditions.
Again, before breakfast you have the chance to participate in an early morning bird watching excursion. After breakfast enjoy a forest hike with your guide along the various trails near the lodge.
He will show you native flora species which have been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds if not thousands of years and also for building homes, making baskets, twine, weapons, clothing and for food.
Back to the lodge for lunch and then have time to relax in your hammock before traveling upriver by canoe to observe a local family panning for gold.
Afterwards, you may again choose to float back to the lodge on an inner tube or simply enjoy a refreshing swim in the river.
Marvel at your final Amazon sunset before dinner. After dinner an optional night walk may be offered.
After a hearty breakfast and then travel by canoe or ranchera from Yachana back to the city of Coca for your flight back to Quito. If traveling by land, you’ll have the chance to observe Amazon life other communities and if by river, have one last opportunity to appreciate the vastness of the rainforest and reflect on your experience at Yachana.
Please be aware that Yachana Lodge cannot guarantee that you will see wildlife because of the unpredictable nature of animals and due to the fact that the area around the Lodge has been impacted by human presence. Lodge activities may vary in order or due to weather conditions but rest assured your guide will do everything possible to maintain the established itinerary whenever possible.
