Hike around the Chuzalongos Valley

Chuzalongos Valley - EcuadorDuration: 8 hours
Distance:
8 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light
Altitude:
4120 to 4500 asl.

The Chuzalongos are three peaks remaining from an ancient crater that surround a swamp and are located to the west of the Antisana Volcano.  This magical place is home to rabbits, foxes, llamas, wild-horses, falcons, curiquingues, hummingbirds, sparrow-hawks, condors, owls and many other species.  The typical highland vegetation let us appreciate a variety of plants resistant to extreme cold weather like chuquiraguas, verbens and the highland grass among others.

Our route begins at the end of the country road leading to the volcano, where our transport will take us.  From there we start walking through the valley on a slight slope and then ascend to one of the three peaks of the Chuzalongos, where the bigger bird species nest and glide.  Throughout this hike we have a complete view of the Antisana Volcano and its surrounding valleys.  Here, we can appreciate the fragile ecosystem that depends on the glaciers and their preservation.

We then cross to the other side of the gully, formed ages ago by water escaping from the old crater, to our transport that will take us to the Hacienda Antisana to enjoy a meal of Ecuadorian specialties.

The Antisana Hacienda is an old, large estate located in the highlands of the volcano. It was the staying place of the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt and other scientific researchers such as Wolf, Whymper, Hans Meyer, Stubel, and Marcos Jiménez de la Espada.  These men gave the Volcano Avenue its name.  The Hacienda's house is of typical Andean construction, made of sun dried bricks and straw ceiling.  It includes a restaurant and a warm and cozy interior.

Hike around the enchanted city of the Ilinizas

Ilinizas Volcano Twin Peaks - Ecuador Volcano Avenue Duration: 8 hours
Distance:
8 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light
Altitude:
3500 to 4500 m.a.s.l.

The Ilinizas are two peaks from the same volcano. When the crater of this old volcano collapsed and was destroyed these two peaks were the only remains.  The north peak is 5116 meters high, easy to climb, making it possible for people with little or no climbing experience to ascend to it, but always with a specialized mountain guide.  The south peak is 5216 meters above sea level and has still some glacier.  Sadly because of global warming it is melting away, it is a clear example of the changes on our planet.

The path leading to the mountain shelter starts at 3500 m.a.s.l. at the little altar made for the "Virgen del Chaupi" (Chaupi Virgin) just at the lower foothill.  This path goes across an Andean forest called the "Enchanted City" that receives this name because from the distance and with thick fog, the twisted trees give the appearance of small houses.  This forest is composed by plants and trees from the highland, such as piquiles, colcas, mortinos, pumamaquis, yanaquiros, pantzas, campaneros, among others.  Birds like owls, hummingbirds, falchions, eagles make these mountains their home.
We will walk to the mountain shelter where there is usually a fox that comes around looking for food.   There we will enjoy a lunchbox and rest from the effort and the height to then descend back to our transport.

Necessary equipment:

Proper footwear, cold weather clothing, winter cap, gloves, sun block, sunglasses, camera and rain protection. Binoculars are recommended.

Hike around the Secas Lake and the Antisana lava flow

Antisana Volcano ava flow - EcuadorDuration: 8 hours
Distance:
2 kilometers
Difficulty:
Medium - Hard
Altitude:
3350 to 3700 m.a.s.l.

The lava flow of the Antisana volcano was originated at Muertepungo, a huge hole, now turned into a lake, at the side of the volcano, which was formed by the pressure of the magma on its way to the surface.  This great flow has a length of 11 kilometers descending to the Secas Lake, forming a real stone river.

Our route begins at the lake shore.  We will head east, crossing the primary Andean forest, populated by hummingbirds, owls, eagles and falchions among other bird species.  As we leave the forest behind, we enter a little path on the lava flow, with a wide view of the lake.  This lunar landscape is composed mostly of the lava rocks with very little vegetation. Here we have the opportunity to appreciate that the flow was once an entire piece of rock when it cooled down, but over time water that leaked in the small cracks and then froze fractured the rock giving the impression at times that the rocks were cut by a knife.

We also have a view of the huge rock walls where the condors sleep at night, Andean valleys and vegetation like alder-trees, pumumaquis and some small bushes.

On this same route we reach a highpoint of the flow, to discover a small highland valley, which was somehow spared from the flow but trapped in the middle of it.

Our way follows down to this mysterious valley.  We take a path at the edge of the flow to descend to the lake, where our transport will pick us up and take us to enjoy an Ecuadorian specialty at the Antisana Hacienda at the foot of the volcano in one of the most famous Ecuadorian highlands due to its flora and fauna.

Hike to the Pasochoa Volcano

Hike to the Pasochoa Volcano - EcuadorDuration: 7 hours or 10 hours
Distance:
6 kilometers or 12 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light or Medium
Altitude:
2700 to 4200 m.a.s.l.

The Volcano Pasochoa is a small and old volcano, which is just and hour and a half drive from Quito, and densely populated with a variety of birds such as hummingbirds, condors, owls, falcons, eagles, vultures, and many other species.  It is also the home of pumas, rabbits, foxes, deer and other mammals.  The crater maintains a very irregular surface, which couldn't be used for agriculture, leaving the primary Andean forest preserved as one of the most representative of this type of vegetation.

Due to its unique location and altitude, this area has good weather throughout the whole year.

We offer two different routes where the vegetation changes depending on the altitude of the subtropical forest, cloud forest, mountain forest and highland. The routes end at rock pyramids, which form the ancient crater.

  1. Hike through the Pasochoa Crater.
    - This easy route takes 2 to 6 hours.  It is a circular route across the subtropical, cloud and mountain forest of the volcano.

  2. Pasochoa Peak.
    - This route takes 8 hours and goes through the subtropical, cloud, and mountain forest to end in the highland, where we will keep ascending to the rock pyramids where the condors live, to finally reach the peak of this ancient volcano.

On the short route we offer a typical Ecuadorian specialty lunch at the La Matilda Restaurant.  On the long route we will enjoy a box-lunch at the peak of the volcano, with a spectacular view.

La Matilda is a nice ecological restaurant where each detail was created to harmonize with nature's delightful design.  With typical and international cuisine, La Matilda offers healthy homemade food.
