Adventure & Ecological Reserve
There is an "Exploratory" research and interpretation center owned and managed by "Fundación Terra" which provides information about the protected area and its surroundings.
Rancho del Cañón (Canyon Ranch)
This is a protected area of 625-acres (250-
hectares) located at the entrance of Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. It is possible to do trekking on ecological footpaths and appreciate the local flora and fauna which boasts unique endemic species (more that 160 bird species, tapirs,
spectacled bears, etc.)
Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve
This is managed by the Ministry of the Environment.
It has an approximate area of 1-million acres (400,000 hectares) composed mainly of páramo, primary forests, rivers, and lagoons.
It is considered one of the areas of greatest animal and plant diversity in Ecuador. By paying an entrance fee, starting in Papallacta one can visit the reserve highlands composed of paramo and high forests. The paramo, considered a carbon deposit, collects and regulates water flow. Trout fishing is allowed with a permit issued by the controlling authorities.
Recommendations:
Wear adequate clothing to protect yourself against cold and rain. We recommend sun block cream (highly recommended while at the outdoor swimming pool), sunglasses and mosquito repellent, particularly if you intend to go trekking.
