Welcome
to Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve®!
|
There are many lodges in the Ecuadorian Amazon, but Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve® is unique because not only will you see it’s biodiversity, but experience it’s culture as well. Here lies the home of the Achuar people.
Achuar houses are built from wood, elliptically shaped, normally without external walls and covered by a very complex thatched roof made of palm leaves. This turns the Achuar house into a vast structure, harmonious with nature, and creates cool rooms in the midst of an extremely hot
and humid environment.

| Experience a day with the Achuar families hiking in the rainforest, swimming, birding or a number of other activities. As part of a small group, no larger than ten, you can choose from three programs; easy, moderate and difficult.
(For a map showing routes, Click
Here.)
If a birding guide is desired, mention that to your booking agent.
(If you are a booking agent, check with your clients to
see if they want a birding guide.)
Kapawi is the most extensive ecotourism project in the Ecuadorian Amazon basin.

The entire lodge is powered by solar energy and was built on stilts to minimize the impact on the surrounding vegetation.
Solar heated showers provide five gallons of hot water per person per day.
All soap, shampoo and detergents are biodegradable. Sewage goes through a three step drainage process. Waste is disposed of using the most appropriate methods. Canoes are equipped with four stroke outboard engines, which minimize noise and pollution. Electric outboard motors are used in fragile riverside ecosystems.

The Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon rainforest boasts the largest biodiversity in the world.
Scientists consider it one of the twenty-five "hot spots" on the planet that must be preserved for the survival of the earth as we know it.
It extends over 5.5 million square kilometers and is home to more varieties of plants and animals than any other place on Earth.

|
In the near future, the lodge will be awarded to the Achuar Nation. A monthly rent is paid to NAE for the use of their land will total over
$600,000 and a ten dollar local fee charged to each visitor will add an estimated additional
$150,000. All of these contributions are directed to fund a variety of Achuar projects.
These projects are intended to enhance the Achuars’ ability to manage integration with the modern world on their own terms, and to defend their lands against encroachment.
