| The Switzerland of South
America… Ecuador was the core of the Inca Empire and later
the gem of Colonial Spain. This attractive little country
combines impressive craters lost in the clouds, Amazonian
moisture within a giant rain forest, and beautiful Pacific
beaches - all under the influence of an authentic Indian
culture. |
|
How to get there:
From Miami, in about three and a half hours, on
daily flights by American Airlines and
Continental Airlines, American citizens (with no
visa requirements) can begin an adventure to remember forever.

Practical
Tips
- UPDATE:
See our News
and Notices Page for
additional information.
-
Immunizations: Passengers arriving from Columbia,
Chile, Argentina, Germany, Venezuela, and Italy are required
to present a measles and chickenpox vaccination certificate
for entry into Ecuador.
-
Formalities: Passport
required, but U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a
tourist visa for less than 90 days. Exit airport tax of
US$40.80 from Quito or US$30.16 from Guayaquil for
International departures. TAME, the local airline in charge of domestic
flights within Ecuador, has fees in the amount of US$10 on flights to the Galapagos Islands and
US$5 on other
destinations inside the country.
-
Galapagos entrance fee US$100.00. A transit control
form is reqired at a cost of US$10.00.
-
Money exchange rate: The
national currency was the "Sucre".
Now it's the U.S. dollar! The banks are
open eight hours a day. Major credit cards are accepted
in most shops, hotels and restaurants.
-
The time difference with
the American East coast is about 1 hour - 3 hours with the
West coast.
-
Climate: In
Ecuador you can easily pass through the four seasons in one
day, especially in the highlands "sierra", where
you will probably need a sweater in the mornings and
evenings. But, in general, there are two main seasons.
The rainy season is between November and April, and the
summer between May and October. You will enjoy a year round,
temperate climate. ...And Ecuador does not observe Daylight
Savings Time, since it is located directly on the equator
(whence the name, "Ecuador").
-
Communications:
Most big hotels will provide international and local phone
services, as well as fax, Internet and email.
-
Office and shopping hours:
Official offices and banks open between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM,
shopping centers between 9:30 AM and 8 PM, shops from 9 AM
to 6 PM.
