On route to the San Rafael Glacier...
The San Rafael Glacier, in the Northern Ice Field, is without doubt a spectacle of magnificent magic and color all of which is created by the wide variety of shapes and sizes of its ice floes. The San Rafael Glacier, so baptized by the Spanish Jesuit, Juan García Tao, who discovered this splendid natural wonder in 1620, is considered to be the closest Glacier to the Equator, that reaches the ocean. It was declared a world Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1978, and is a Chilean National Park.

The Northern Ice Field has a total surface of 4,400 square km and is located in the heights of the Andes Mountains, from where it is born. From there it runs 15 kilometers until it deposits it ice into the quiet waters of the San Rafael Lagoon. The ice towers reach a height of 60 meters, in the center of the glacier they go down to a depth of 230 meters below
sea level. The San Rafael Glacier is home to an immense quantity of native fauna; besides this it is one of the glaciers with the greatest quantity of ice avalanches in the Patagonia, due to this it is absolutely marvelous to navigate amongst the resulting ice floes. While navigating amongst this Antarctica sensation we enjoy a traditional toast with whisky served on millennium old ice.
