Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
at Lighthouse Reef Resort:
The Great Blue Hole

Once you reach the reef, you'll discover truly amazing sights including the Great Blue Hole.  Gigantic - 15 by 10 feet - basket sponges.  Purple sea fans with spans of up to nine feet. Barracuda, Giant Groupers, Spotted Moray, Spider Crabs, Angel Fish, all swimming undisturbed.  The rare Sea Turtles will capture the eye of most visitors.  Skilled dive masters will point out cleverly camouflaged sea life and exotic coral formations in the 40-mile preserve.

With the available air service, you can reach  Lighthouse Reef Resort via a 20-minute flight instead of a tedious, 4-hour boat trip.

Says Ocean Realm: "Indeed Lighthouse Reef is a wondrous place that should be preserved in its pristine state for future generations."

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

In the shallow lagoon, you can learn to snorkel. Beneath these waters, you'll find an enchanted world of submarine life and be captivated by the infinite variety of fish darting and twisting through the gem-tinted coral.

In the shallower waters on the surrounding area, there is an abundance of colorful and exotic marine life including various corals, exotic fish, and more!

The Great Blue Hole

Below the 60 foot level, there is not much coral present.  In the Blue Hole, at depths of 80-90 feet, one may see large jacks, groupers, or  maybe a large shark or two.  Below the 150 foot level, one will find huge caves filled with huge stalactites and stalagmites -  truly geologic wonders!

Notes:

  • There are no whirlpool-like currents in the Blue Hole - water doesn't circulate freely, so there is very little marine life below the shallow depths.

  • In the deeper waters of the Blue Hole, one might see sharks, but these are scarce.

  • We provide tanks, weights and belts.  We have limited rental gear available, so please be sure to reserve ahead of time.  Limited rental gear is available.  Divers should bring the basics: BC, regulator, fins and mask. Weight belts and tanks are provided. Those who come for fishing usually choose to bring their own gear.

  • At depths below 120 feet deep, it becomes apparent that thousands of years ago, this was a land cave.

  • The temperature at a depth of 130 feet is about 76 degrees Fahrenheit, the year round.
